Strategy:
This can be a delicate letter to write. You
feel you have to refuse their request yet you don't want to offend
them. So approach the letter by carefully explaining the reason
for your action but end on a positive helpful note.
Stage One:
Open the letter by informing the recipient
that sadly his request for a letter of recommendation cannot be
granted.
Stage Two:
Straight away, begin by explaining the
reason for this decision based on how little time he has spent in
your employment.
Stage Three:
Then immediately suggest another attractive,
alternative solution - that if you are approached by his new
employer you will reply most favorably.
Stage four:
End by wishing him well for
the future.
